Nestled in the Kumaon region of Uttarakhand, Nainital is a serene mountain retreat centered around Naini Lake. Legend has it that the lake is one of the emerald-green eyes of the goddess Sati, which fell to earth.
Boating is the quintessential Nainital experience. You can choose between traditional wooden rowing boats, paddle boats, or joining a local sailing club for a ride on their historic yachts. The lake is surrounded by steep green hills, and as the afternoon mist rolls down the slopes, the water takes on a mystical, reflective quality.
After a ride on the water, take a stroll down the Mall Road. It runs parallel to the lake shore, lined with local shops selling handmade candles, pinecone crafts, and warm Kumaoni food. Stop at a local cafe for hot steaming momos and sweet chai as the mountain air cools down.
For the best views of the entire lake and the surrounding Himalayan peaks on a clear day, take the aerial ropeway up to Snow View Point. It rises 2,270 meters above sea level, offering a dramatic vantage point of the Nanda Devi peak.
